Man Charged With DWI After Crashing 2X, Fleeing Scene On East End: Police

He fled the scene of a crash at the traffic circle and then, hit a tree, police say.

NORTH HAVEN, NY — A man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after crashing twice and fleeing the scene in North Haven early Sunday, police said.

According to Southampton Town police, at about 12:16 a.m., a call came in about a crash that took place at the traffic circle on Ferry Road by Short Beach Road. One of the vehicles fled and, shortly after, struck a tree on Cedar Haven Lane, police said.

No injuries were reported, police said.

Southampton Town police responded and, upon further investigation, it was determined that the driver of the vehicle that fled the scene, David Kaplowitz, 56, of New York, NY, was found to have operated his motor vehicle while intoxicated by alcohol, police said. Kaplowitz was arrested and brought to Southampton Town police headquarters for arrest processing, police said.

He was charged with one count of misdemeanor DWI, as well as a vehicle-and-traffic law violation, police said. He was held overnight to appear in Southampton Town Justice Court for morning arraignment, police said.
