Man Found Asleep In Homeowner's Southampton Backyard, With Stolen SUV: Police

The homeowner got a surprise when they arrived and found a stranger asleep in their backyard with a stolen SUV in the driveway, police say.

SOUTHAMPTON, NY — A Southampton resident arrived home Sunday to find a stranger asleep in their backyard — and a stolen SUV in their driveway, police said.

According to Southampton Town police, the incident took place at 12:57 p.m. Patrol officers responded and found Matthew Wynhurst, 34 of Brooklyn, asleep in the backyard, police said.

Wynhurst was subsequently arrested and charged with third-degree criminal trespass, a "B" misdemeanor, police said.

The detective division was notified to assist in locating the owner of the unknown vehicle in the driveway, as Wynhurst reported it was not his, police said.

Further investigation determined the vehicle had been stolen out of the NYPD's jurisdiction sometime during the overnight hours, police said. Wynhurst was also charged with second-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a felony, police said.

Wynhurst was processed at Southampton Town Police Department headquarters and held overnight for morning arraignment, police said.
