Man Stole Wallet From Unlocked Vehicle, Used Woman's Credit Cards: Police

The woman was notified that her credit cards had been used, police say.

FLANDERS, NY — A Flanders man was arrested recently after he reportedly stole a wallet from an unlocked vehicle and used the credit cards, police said.

According to Southampton Town police, on Monday, July 7, Southampton Town police received a report from a resident in Flanders that someone had gone into her vehicle while it was unlocked and stolen her wallet, which contained credit cards and other personal documents.

She reported receiving a notification that her credit cards were being used, and that's when she realized the wallet had been stolen, police said.

The Southampton Town Police Department's detective division began an investigation into the incident. On July 9, police officers, while out on another call, came across some of the stolen items, authorities said.

Detectives were able to identify the items as belonging to the woman from July 7, police said.

Terry Smith, 62, was identified and subsequently arrested on August 5; he was charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, a felony, and fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a felony, police said.

He was processed at Southampton Town police headquarters and released for a future court date, police said.
