Here are the top stories today in Southampton:

  1. Suffolk County Police Financial Crimes Unit detectives are investigating a scam that involved a Bernalillo, New Mexico, resident in believing he'd won the lottery. All that was needed was $8,500 in fees to collect his prize. Police learned the cash would be shipped to a location in Southampton Village and waited at the location. The package was delivered at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 9, but no one responded to the home to retrieve it. Anyone who believes they may be a victim of a scam or have information about a scam to call the Financial Crimes Unit at 631-852-6821. (Southampton Patch)
  2. The Southampton Village Board unanimously approved a resolution on Tuesday night that will ultimately allow a special exception use giving Heart of the Hamptons permission to operate a stand-alone food pantry within the village. (Subscription: 27east.com)
  3. A Nassau County man is dead, and a bus driver injured when a Jeep and a Riverhead school district bus collided in a head-on crash on Sound Avenue in Riverhead Thursday afternoon. Riverhead Police said John A. Caputo, 31, of Valley Stream was operating a Jeep Cherokee westbound on Sound Avenue when he crossed into the oncoming lane and crashed head-on into an eastbound Riverhead Central School District bus just before 5 p.m. Riverhead Police ask anyone with information and any witnesses to call the Riverhead Police Department at 631-727-4500. All calls will be kept confidential, police said. (Riverhead Patch)
  4. The Suffolk County Department of Health Services' Division of Environmental Quality will hold its regular monthly Board of Review Hearing on Thursday, Feb. 17. As stated in the Suffolk County Sanitary Code, the Board of Review hears requests for variances and waivers to the county's requirements for water and sewage disposal for new construction, and for storage of toxic or hazardous materials. Only department representatives, applicants, applicant representatives, and formally invited parties will be able to speak during the hearing. See links on press release for interested party attendance. (Press Release Desk)
