Here are the top stories in Southampton today:
- Dangelo Soto, 21, of Brentwood was arrested as the second man charged in the Christmas day shooting death of Southampton resident Steven Byrnes, 53, in his home, police said. Previously, Dominick Parisi, 57, of Hampton Bays was arrested on Jan. 16; both men were charged with second-degree murder and two counts of first-degree burglary, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said. - Environmental consultants told the Southampton Town Board last week that homeowners along the beaches in Sagaponack and Bridgehampton will need to pay approximately $26 million to pump sand along the shore, as was done in 2014. The $26 million project is slated to begin in late 2023 and be completed in early 2024, 10 years after the original replenishment. "Southampton officials will decide whether to contribute financially, as the project includes four town beaches," said Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman. (Subscription: Newsday)
- Maureen O'Leary Cussen, 55, a Sag Harbor woman, was arrested and charged Wednesday with stealing more than $15,000 while she was working as a treasurer for the Southampton Intermediate School parent-teacher organization, police said. According to police, she stole the PTO funds between February 2018 and October 2020. Cussen was charged with third-degree grand larceny and released on her own recognizance, police said. - Looking to kick the winter blues? "Sag Harbor Village’s annual HarborFrost festival returns to shine its light during this cold, dark time of year. Now in its 11th incarnation, familiar attractions return, new outdoor events have been added, and the community is eagerly anticipating their chance to safely commune on Saturday, Feb. 5, 1–6 p.m.," said Dan's Papers.
