On June 3, the Town of Southampton officially launched a public service announcement campaign to raise awareness for commuters to follow the rules of the road. A key recommendation of the Traffic Mitigation and Safety Task Force Final Report is to encourage the town to engage in a public education and awareness campaign to address the need for greater traffic safety, officials said.

According to the final report: "It is the recommendation of the task force that the board continue ongoing efforts in collaboration with the police department to embark on a townwide educational campaign, issuing PSAs."

The efforts are in line with Federal Highway Administrative recommendations as well as areas of Vision Zero, an approach that underscores a viewpoint on shared responsibility for safety, the town said.

The video will run throughout the summer months on the town’s website, social media channels, and Sun TV for local viewers. It is also expected that the town will work on ways to target boost the video on social media so it can appear on devices used by individuals who are in the Southampton area, ensuring that the PSA will touch as many potential commuters as possible who have social media.

Southampton Town Councilman Michael Iasilli, who spearheaded the project, said: "This is a great step toward enhancing traffic safety in the Town of Southampton and fulfills a key recommendation of the Traffic Mitigation and Safety Task Force Final Report. Many have asked us what the town can do besides typical enforcement and enactment of regulations. This is a proactive way to fill the gaps and raise awareness of this critical issue. I have to thank Southampton Town Police Chief James Kiernan for his efforts in helping us advance this key priority."

Additional videos will be made and disseminated as the summer months continue.

The PSA video will soon appear on the Town’s main flash page.
