Hazardous Outlook Issued For Storm Approaching The Hudson Valley

There could be some snow showers but heavy rain is the main event. Here's the latest.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — The storm system approaching from the south late Sunday could bring heavy rain and strong winds to the region, and the National Weather Service has issued a hazardous outlook for Saturday through Thursday in Dutchess and Ulster counties.

However, because the storm's track and intensity is still uncertain, the National Weather Service is holding off making predictions about specific impacts in the Hudson Valley.

The storm will evolve from a system bringing excessive rain and severe thunderstorms to Florida to end the week.

It will have similar characteristics to the one that slammed the mid-Atlantic and Northeast with heavy rain and wind just days ago, said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Joe Lundberg. "While there remains some question in terms of the exact track and intensity of this storm, confidence is growing for a significant rain and wind event, especially from the Chesapeake Bay Area to most of southern New England."

Communities in the Hudson Valley could get 2 inches of rain, Bruce Furbeck of First Due Weather said on Facebook, adding that there is "Potential for strong damaging winds, especially east of the Hudson River with peak gusts Monday morning."

The storm could have wide-reaching impacts on commuters and holiday travelers early next week.

One of the factors causing uncertainty is the high pressure area keeping us unseasonably warm. The storm will exacerbate that — temperatures will rise Sunday night into Monday morning. They'll climb from the mid- to the upper-50s in southern Westchester, and from the upper-40s to the mid-50s in the mid-Hudson.

Then they'll plummet into the 30s Monday night across the region.
