More Than 7K Still Out Of Power After Sunday Storms Down Trees, Wires

Multiple roads are still closed.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Severe storms Sunday caused thousands of residents in the region to lose power as trees and wires came down on roads and houses. Utility crews are still working to restore service.

With power out and roads blocked, North Salem and Somers school districts were closed for the day.

  • Central Hudson: 2,791 in Dutchess County, 359 in Ulster, 193 in Putnam, 29 in Orange
  • NYSEG: 1,981 in Westchester, 1,867 in Putnam, 423 in Dutchess
  • O&R: 101 in Orange County, 19 in Rockland


Utility companies reminded people to stay at least 30 feet away from any downed power line. Remember that power lines can be tangled and hidden in fallen trees. Regard all fallen lines are active.

Southeast town officials said the courthouse would be open until 4:30 p.m. as a cooling center where residents may also charge electronic devices.

Lake Road at 202 remains closed in Somers. (Somers Highway Department)

As of 11 a.m. Lake Road in Somers is closed from Louis Drive to 202, according to the most recent update from the Somers Highway Department. Crews are still working on getting people out of Shenorock and Lincolndale.

Officials say the goal for today is just to get roads open. Cleaning up trees will be a secondary priority and will not likely happen today. The town said there is no firm timeline yet for power restoration yet because of the volume of down poles and wires.

Ross Drive is now open at Overhill (still blocked at south end). Parkway is open to Overhill. (South end still blocked). Overhill at 118 is now open. Old Mill is now open to Overhill. Highway Department crews are currently working on the Tighe Road intersection. Lakeshore N. in Lincolndale is now open. Birch is still blocked at Lakeshore S. Many of the roads to the north are still blocked.
