More Rain: Hazardous Outlooks Issued For The Hudson Valley

Damaging winds gusts will be the main threat with any storms, the National Weather Service said.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — The Hudson Valley got far less rain than western Connecticut and central Long Island, but with still coming more Monday the National Weather Service issued one hazardous outlook for Dutchess and Ulster counties and another for Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties.

Numerous showers and scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop ahead of an approaching cold front Monday into the evening. This will bring potential for isolated severe storms with damaging wind gusts and localized flash flooding, the NWS said. A few storms may be severe and the Storm Prediction Center has expanded its marginal risk for severe thunderstorms to cover most of eastern New York into western New England. Damaging winds gusts will be the main threat with any storms.

"Drenching rain and thunderstorms crawling across the East will continue to interfere with commutes and outdoor plans before the much-needed arrival of cooler, less humid and drier weather," said Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist.

"We will struggle to reach 70°F Wednesday and Thursday morning may start out in the 40s in many locations," Bruce Furbeck of First Due Weather said on Facebook.

Over the weekend, a few miles made a big difference. Sandy Hook in Connecticut was inundated with 12 inches of rain and South Beach in Suffolk County got 10 inches from Saturday night to Monday morning. Much of that fell at a rate of 3+ inches an hour.

The heaviest rainfall reported in the Hudson Valley was 3.88 inches in New Rochelle, which in other circumstances would be considered a lot.

"The Hudson Valley has really lucked out, so we have a lot to be grateful for," said Bill Potter of Hudson Valley Weather.
