Obituary: Brewster Woman to be Remembered

Marie Elizabeth Twomey, 68, of Brewster, passed away Sunday morning after a prolonged battle with cancer.
Hailing from Astoria, Marie is the daughter of Maria and John Greg, who emigrated from Hungary in the 1930s. A gifted student, Marie attended The Mary Louis Academy in Jamaica (NY) and earned a degree in physical education from Hunter College in Manhattan.

She married the late Steven Twomey in 1965 at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. In 1966, she gave birth to their daughter, Jennifer, followed two years later by their son, Scott, while living in Bay Shore on Long Island.
Marie’s working career began shortly after moving to Brewster in 1972; she held positions at the Danbury News-Times and was co-owner of the Brewster Liquor Store. She retired from Guideposts (Carmel, NY) in 2009 after successfully leading a large remittance-processing department for many years.

Marie took pleasure in cooking for family and friends. Even during her illness, she delighted in having her loved ones together for food, lively political discussions, and toplay contract rummy. Her keen eye for design kept her busy improving her home andadvising friends who were inspired by her work. She kept abreast of world events and national news. On occasion, she enjoyed trips to visit friends in Michigan, Rhode Island and Maine. Most of all, she treasured the serenity of her home and the company off amily and friends.
Marie leaves behind a family who loved her deeply. She is survived by her brother, John Greg of Queens; her children, Jennifer Johnson of Brewster, and Scott Twomey and his wife, Karen, of Cranford, NJ; her grandson, Steven Johnson; and her mother, Maria Greg, in residence at Waterview Hills (Purdys, NY) , who celebrated her 100th birthdaythis past December. Her family and friends were by her side throughout her illness and greatly mourn her loss.
Marie and her family will forever remember the outpouring of love and support given to them during her illness and throughout her life. We thank you for the kindness bestowed upon us.
A wake for Marie will be held at Beecher Funeral Home (located on Putnam Avenue in Brewster, (845)-279-3615) from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 24. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, at in Brewster.
