Obituary: George R. Godfrey, Brewster Firefighter, Officer

He was also a village trustee - and was known as the Mayor of the Brewster Train Station.

George R. Godfrey of Brewster, NY, passed away in Somers, NY Monday May 13, 2024, at the age of 91.

George was born December 9, 1932, in Brewster, NY, son of the late Raymond and Gladys Godfrey. He attended Brewster Schools, then joined the Army and fought in the Korean War from 1951-1954, receiving 3 bronze service stars. On April 20, 1956, he married Anne Freeburn in the First Baptist Church in Brewster.

George worked as a truck driver for Local 456 out of Elmsford, NY spending twenty years driving for Grand Union in Mt. Kisco. He also worked as a Brewster Village Police Officer, then drove a bus for the Brewster Central School District. George was a proud sixty five-year member of the Brewster Fire Dept. and ex captain of the rescue squad, he was a trustee on the Brewster Village Board, member of the Brewster VFW Post 672 and was known as the Mayor of the Brewster Train station, greeting riders coming on and off the trains and was a member of the Lakeview Community Church in Carmel, NY.

Goerge was predeceased by his wife Anne in 2001. He is survived by his sons, Dan Godfrey of Danbury, CT, Ralph Godfrey of Carmel, NY; granddaughters Katlyn Godfrey and Chelsea Schmoke. He was also predeceased by his brothers Ray, Charlie, and Ronnie and sisters, Vivian, Lois, Ruthie, Marion, and Dorothy.

A funeral service will take place on Saturday May 18, 2024, at 10:00 am at Beecher Funeral Home, 1 Putnam Ave., Brewster followed by the burial in Union Valley Cemetery in Mahopac. Calling hours will take place at the funeral home on Friday May 17, 2024, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
