Obituary: Viola Sniffen, Longtime Brewster Resident

Viola Lillian Sniffen of Dover Plains, NY, passed away at home Saturday October 21, 2023, with her family at her side at the age of 84.

Viola was born November 1, 1938, in Mt. Kisco, NY, daughter of the late Raymond and Catherine (Coughlin) Mayes. She graduated from Purdy’s High School, then on June 3, 1956, she married Irving G. Sniffen in Our Lady of the Lake Church in Lake Carmel, NY. They lived most of their life in Brewster, NY, where they raised their family, moving to Dover Plains ten years ago. Viola worked for Brewster Plastics for twenty-five years retiring as supervisor in 2001.

Viola was predeceased by her husband Irving in 2014. She is survived by her sons M. Wayne Sniffen and his wife Susan of Brewster, NY, John J. Sniffen of Patterson, NY; daughters Nora Sniffen-Wekerle and her husband Richard of Danbury, CT, Carole Mill-Smith and her husband Edward of Patterson, NY and Tammy Sniffen of Dover Plains, NY; sisters Deborah Mayes of Pawling, NY and Nancy Nelson of PA. She was also predeceased by her son George Sniffen in 2021, a sister Carol Flood and brother Raymond Mayes Jr…

A graveside service will take place on Friday October 27, 2023, at 11:00 am at Milltown Rural Cemetery on Milltown Road in Brewster. Calling hours will take place on Thursday October 26, 2023, at Beecher Funeral Home, 1 Putnam Ave., Brewster, NY from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
