Here are the top stories today in Sunset Park:
- Asian-American voters in New York City came out in force for conservative GOP mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa, who got 46% of the entire vote in Sunset Park. According to experts, that has to do with disagreements over the ending of the gifted and talented program in schools, and projects to build or expand jails across the city. (NBC New York)
- Yemeni entrepreneurs across Brooklyn are reclaiming their country's popular high-end coffee by opening their own cafes and restaurants. In Sunset Park, Hakim Sulaimani's Yafa Café serves up za'atar-sprinkled avocado toast and $7 specialty coffees. It's expensive because it's sourced from traditional coffee growers in Yemen. - More than half of all New Yorkers say they are planning on taking some level of COVID-19 precautions this Thanksgiving, according to the results from a Patch survey. Despite low cases and high vaccination rates more than 50% say they aren't traveling. (NYC Patch)
- Jack Le Vine, a 96 year old World War II veteran who lives in South Slope, got a surprise visit from his neighbors this Veterans Day, who brought the day's parade to his front door. Le Vine is one of only around 5,000 living World War II in New York City. (The New York Times)
