Here are the top stories today in Sunset Park:
- The Department of Transportation unveiled a modified proposal for the hotly contested redesign of Seventh and Eighth Avenues in Sunset Park. While the original proposal included bike lanes on both avenues and made them one-way, the modification create a two-way protected bike lane on Seventh. Eighth Avenue is a dangerous street: between 2014 and 2018 the area between 39th and 66th streets saw 233 pedestrian injuries. (Brooklyn Eagle)
- Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Wednesday that she was ditching a widely opposed plan to build a new power plant in Astoria, Queens. But that doesn't stop the Astoria Generating Company’s plan to replace its gas-fired peaker plants, located near Sunset Park and Gowanus. (The City)
- Speaking of Governor Hochul, she said yesterday that she isn't ruling out a vaccine mandate for public school students, depending on whether there's a significant rise in COVID-19 hospitalizations. (NYC Patch)
