Here are the top stories in Sunset Park today:
- Assaults against Asians in New York City in September increased by 368%, according to NYPD data. In response, the Asian American Federation held an "Upstander Intervention Training" in Sunset Park this weekend, aimed at teaching bystanders how to respond when they see a hate crime or assault occur – beyond simply dialing 911. (Big News Network)
- Brooklyn Borough President and Democratic nominee for mayor Eric Adams was out campaigning in Sunset Park this week, before last night's mayoral debate. See Patch's debate coverage here. (Spectrum News NY1)
- The sanitation department is expanding its compost and organics pickup program to Sunset Park starting next week. The program, which neighborhoods can opt into on a voluntary basis, is relaunching after an extended pandemic-related pause. (AM New York)
- Multiple NYC politicians, including Carlos Menchaca, who represents Sunset Park in City Council, were arrested at a taxi medallion protest outside City Hall. Taxi drivers are on a hunger strike demanding debt relief from the city. (Yahoo News)
