Here are the top stories today in Sunset Park:
- New York State announced a new $539 Million fund to help support low-income homeowners, with fully-forgivable loans of up to $50,000. Sunset Park Rep. Nydia Velazquez said the fund would "help working class homeowners pay their mortgage, prevent default, foreclosure, and displacement." (BK Reader)
- The New York City council passed a bill yesterday allowing immigrants who aren't citizens to vote in municipal (city-level) elections. This could have the biggest impact in heavily-immigrant neighborhoods like Sunset Park. Councilman Carlos Menchaca was in strong support of the measure. (NYC Patch)
- New York Attorney General Letitia James dropped out of the race for governor Thursday, after consistently lagging behind Governor Kathy Hochul in polls. Public advocate Jumaane Williams and Rep. Tom Suozzi are still in the running, and maybe even Bill de Blasio. (NYC Patch)
- Mayor-Elect Adams appointed David Banks, the founder of a boys' school in The Bronx called Eagle Academy as the city's next schools chancellor. Banks committed to making large investments in uplifting educational disparities in communities of color. "We spend $38 Billion every year in this system," he said, "and 65% of Black and Brown children never achieve proficiency. That's a betrayal." (CBS New York)
- Krampus, "a lovingly filthy play about the families we make and the inherited holiday traditions we break," is coming to Industry City next week. (Broadway world)
