NYU Lutheran Gets A Big Donation — And A Name Change

SUNSET PARK, BROOKLYN — Sunset Park's NYU Lutheran hospital was recently given a $25 million gift and will get a new name change, too.

The hospital will now be known as "NYU Langone Hospital – Brooklyn," according to a statement announcing the massive donation, made by the Bezos Foundation.

The Bezos Foundation is run by Jackie and Mike Bezos, whose son, Jeff, is the founder of Amazon. They made the $25 million donation to help fund several hospital initiatives.

“When we first visited NYU Langone Hospital – Brooklyn, we realized why it has been a beacon for Sunset Park and the surrounding community for more than 100 years,” Jackie Bezos said in a statement.

"This is a wonderful community and our hope is for them to experience care that is greater than they have ever had before," Mike Bezos said.

The money will support early childhood programs based on "early brain development" and "to advance mother–baby care across the institution and support families during the critical first years of a child’s life," according to a statement from NYU Langone.

The hospital estimates that it will deliver 4,500 babies in 2018.

"This is a significant step forward for our medical center, which has made considerable changes and improvements to better help patients and communities across Brooklyn," Dr. Bret J. Rudy, the executive hospital director and senior vice president at NYU Langone, said in a press release.

"This generous gift from the Bezos Family Foundation represents a major milestone in our institution’s history. What our talented physicians, researchers, and staff will be able to accomplish thanks to the foundation’s support will enable NYU Langone Hospital – Brooklyn to provide outstanding care for the community—making us a destination for growing families."
