Here are the top stories today in Sunset Park:
- Predominantly Asian neighborhoods across New York City — including Sunset Park — hope that the state's redistricting process will bring them more representational power in the State Assembly and Senate. District lines, which are redrawn ever 10 years, sometimes split neighborhoods apart, or limit the voting representation of minority groups. A redistricting hearing for Brooklyn will take place next Wednesday. (Paywall: The New York Times, Free version: The City)
- Two Asian-American groups in New York State have opposing views over how their communities should be represented in government Census data. One left-leaning coalition introduced "The Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Disaggregation bill" which seeks to collect data on specific Asian communities from different countries, rather than see "Asians" as a homogenous voting block. Another Asian-American group thinks that would lower "the political power of Asians in New York." (Politics NY)
- Today is Veteran's Day, and the city's annual parade is back in person this year along Fifth Avenue in Manhattan starting at 8 a.m. (NYC Patch)
- And in honor of Veterans Day, take a look at an NYU program at the Brooklyn Navy Yard that aims to help veterans become entrepreneurs. (Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
