Here are the top stories in Sunset Park today:
- The historic Girls High School building, located at 475 Nostrand Ave., was a blaze on the fourth floor, at around 7:20 p.m., Tuesday, according to fire officials. Around 60 firefighters brought the blaze under control just after 8 p.m., the FDNY said. The Nostrand Avenue building is now home to the Brooklyn Adult Learning Center. (Patch)
- Upon entering the Liberty View Industrial Plaza in Industry City, you will see a 13-foot-tall bronze Captain America statue! The statue is the work of sculptor Dave Cortes, who was approached by Marvel to make the statue in honor of Captain America’s 75th anniversary in 2016. On the top of the bronze plinth are the words “I’m just a kid from Brooklyn,” a line from the 2011 film "Captain America: The First Avenger." (Untapped New York)
- Early Monday morning a fire broke out in an electric scooter repair business, in Sunset Park. The cause of the fire was from Lithium-ion batteries used for electric bikes and scooters, FDNY fire marshals said Tuesday. The city’s buildings department said in a statement Monday, the business on the ground floor stored batteries “contrary to the legal occupancy of the building.” (Spectrum News NY1)
- Mayor Eric Adams' first appearance at the Met Gala was an impressionable one. His one-of-a-kind tux, designed by Laolu Senbanjo designs, carried a message, "End Gun Violence."(WABC-TV)
