Here are the top stories in Sunset Park today:

  1. Gov. Kathy Hochul is directing the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to conduct an environmental review for the Interborough Express project that would connect communities in Queens and Brooklyn to as many as 17 subway lines and the LIRR. "The plan would use the existing right of way of the Bay Ridge Branch, which is a freight rail line that runs through Brooklyn and Queens, connecting the ethnically and economically diverse neighborhoods of: Ridgewood, Middle Village, Maspeth, Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, Sunset Park, Borough Park, Kensington, Midwood, Flatbush, Flatlands, New Lots, Brownsville, East New York, and Bushwick, with several new stations in communities not currently served by rail transit," as reported by the Forum. (The Forum Newsgroup)
  2. This weekend's Sunset Park area online events. There are virtual online sessions for starting a business and preparing for yours and/or a loved one's final passage in life. (Sunset Park Patch)
  3. You've heard of the phrase, "cooking with gas," well, that term is going to the wayside for new buildings in New York City. Before closing out 2021, Mayor Bill de Blasio signed a bill into law banning gas combustion in new buildings. That means no new gas stoves, no new gas furnaces, and no new gas water heaters. Part of Gov. Kathy Hochul’s 2022 State of the State Address was to ban gas combustion statewide. (Utility Dive)
