Here are the top stories today in Sunset Park:

  1. To share memories of Kade Lewin, a 12-year-old student at Brooklyn Science and Engineering Academy, students and staff spoke in a schoolyard memorial Wednesday. Lewin was shot and killed just four blocks from his school last month. (Chalkbeat New York)
  2. Frank R. James, 62, accused of committing a mass shooting on a subway train in Brooklyn, made his first court appearance Thursday on federal terrorism charges. Investigators found a bag and a gun that Lewin purchased some time ago despite his criminal record. (WTVD-TV)
  3. Students at PS 46 Edward C. Blum School celebrated new blooms in front of its Fort Greene elementary school this week and advocated for more park space in their neighborhood. Joined by Councilmember Crystal Hudson and advocacy group New Yorkers 4 Parks on Monday morning, the community discussed the importance of well-funded parks and playgrounds. Hudson's District 35 is comprised of less than 10 percent parkland, leaving Brooklyn residents with limited options for spending time outdoors. (Brooklyn Paper)
