Here are the top stories in Sunset Park today:
- Have your voice heard in the city’s budget for the upcoming fiscal year. If you plan on voting for the five Brooklyn City Council districts taking part in this year’s participatory budgeting cycle is ending this Sunday, April 10. See what districts are participating and what projects they are proposing. (Brownstoner)
- Bilingual education is becoming increasingly popular in New York City as 50 percent of NYC's population speak only English at home. Bilingual education is when a child learns subject matter such as reading, writing and math in two different languages. Bilingual education generally includes English and a secondary language. See the list of public, charter and private schools throughout the metro area providing Bilingual education. (New York Family)
- Following a major removal of homeless encampments in the area of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE) in Brooklyn in March, many homeless people are still living in the area. The area which was once filled with a long stretch of tents now includes homeless people in sleeping bags and carrying blankets to weather the cold. Mayor Eric Adams has defended this initiative, and the actions that his "task force" has taken across New York City to remove vagrants. (Brooklyn Paper)
- A 53-year-old Crown Heights man was standing in the center median of Eastern Parkway when he was struck and killed by a NYPD van. The man was rushed to Kings County Hospital where he later died. Witnesses at the scene said that the man regularly pan-handled on the Eastern Parkway corridor and was begging for change when he was hit. The incident is being investigated. (FOX 5 NY)
