2 Officers Injured During Incident At MercyFirst: Police

Police say three teens were arrested after they tried to stop the officers from arrest a fourth, who had attacked them.

SYOSSET, NY — Four teens were arrested and two officers were injured following an incident at the MercyFirst facility in Syosset Thursday afternoon.

According to police, officers responded to MercyFirst, at 525 Convent Road, just before 1 p.m. for a disturbance. After investigating, police say the officers needed to have a 14-year-old boy brought to a hospital for evaluation. The teen started to fight with the officers, police said, and injured two of them. The officers placed him into custody, police said, and as they attempted to put him into an ambulance, three other teens tried to stop them by holding onto the teen and cursing at the officers.

The police then placed the three other teens under arrest.

The two injured officers were taken to a hospital for treatment. One suffered a concussion and the other broke his hand.

The 14-year-old boy is charged with second-degree assault, resisting arrest and second-degree obstructing governmental administration.

Two other teens — a 15-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl — are charged with second-degree obstructing governmental administration. A 16-year-old boy is charged with second-degree obstructing governmental administration and second-degree harassment.

All four teens received appearance tickets are are due to appear at Nassau County Family Court on Dec. 16.

MercyFirst released a statement about the incident.

"Yesterday afternoon, a youth undergoing therapy on campus began to experience extreme emotional trauma and required an emergency room assessment," they said. "Police were called to transport the youth to the ER, as is the standard protocol. A physical altercation began between the youth and the arriving officers, which escalated when three other youths on campus became involved. The youth who initiated the incident will not be returning to campus. MercyFirst is grateful for the response and professionalism of law enforcement and the injured officers are in our prayers."
