Bristal Assisted Living Residents Remember Pearl Harbor Anniversary
Bristal Assisted Living honors 82nd Pearl Harbor anniversary, remembers 12 locals lost, and pays tribute to the first Long Islander killed.

Residents of The Bristal Assisted Living Community at North Hills, who are in their 80’s and 90’s held a commemorative ceremony honoring the twelve Long Islanders who perished 82 years ago when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7,1941. Twelve memorial candles were lit in their memory.
2,403 Americans perished in the attack.
20-year-old Private Russel Penny of Mattituck is considered the first Suffolk County resident to have died in WW Two. Penny, a 1939 Mattituck High School graduate, enlisted in the Army in January 1940, serving in the Air Corps.
The other Long Islanders who died during the one hour and 15-minute attack included:
- Edward Munroe Bates Jr., of Great Neck;
- Oran Merrill Brabbzson, of East Meadow;
- Francis Lloyd Carey, of Roosevelt;
- Harry Gregory Chernucha, of North Merrick;
- Michael Peleschak, of New Hyde Park;
- Arthur Severin Rasmussen, of Huntington;
- Mitchell Cohn, of Woodmere;
- Kenneth Lyle Jayne, of Patchogue;
- John T. Haughey of Hicksville;
- Walter J. Zuschlag, of Suffolk County;
- Carl A. Johnson, of Sayville.
