Drunken Driver Hit, Killed Man In Nassau Diner Parking Lot: Police

Police say the driver backed up his car and hit a patron who was just leaving the diner.

WOODBURY, NY — A Woodbury man was arrested after police said he hit and killed another man exiting a diner Wednesday afternoon.

Around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, police said 62-year-old Willem Specht was backing up his 2004 Infiniti sedan in the parking lot of On Parade Diner, located at 7980 Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury, when he hit 61-year-old Joseph Devito, who was exiting the diner.

Devito suffered severe trauma and was taken to a nearby hospital. He died from his injuries at 3:45 p.m.

Specht remained at the scene and was placed under arrest.

He is charged with driving while intoxicated, second-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree assault, second-degree vehicular manslaughter and second-degree manslaughter. He is scheduled to be arraigned later today in First District Court in Hempstead.
