UPDATE: Firefighters Battle Blaze at Historic Glen Cove Mansion

Numerous firefighters in Glen Cove battled a blaze that broke out Wednesday morning at the historic Woolworth mansion.

The fire broke out at the estate on Crescent Beach Road at 10:52 a.m., according to Glen Cove Fire Chief Joseph Solomito, and took about 90 minutes to bring the fire under control.

The fire was reported by a Glen Cove firefighter who was working on the grounds at the time, according to Glen Cove Police Det. Lt. John Nagle.

The fire started in a downstairs room and quickly spread upstairs to the second and third floor, according to police.

A lot of irreplaceable items were destroyed in the home, with damage that could be well into the millions, police said.

By 4 p.m., firefighters were leaving the scene after checking for hot spots between the walls of the mansion.

There were 100 firefighters on the scene from seven departments, Solomito said.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, Solomito said.

Investigators are still looking into the cause of the fire, but police consider the fire to be electrical in nature.

Known as Winfield Hall, the estate was built in 1916 for F.W. Woolworth. Currently the family of Martin Carey, brother of former New York Gov. Hugh Carey, resides at the estate, but were out of town at the time of the fire, according to Newsday.
