Long Island Weather: Hazardous Weather Outlook Issued

The remnants of Hurricane Florence may cause some issues in our area early next week. See the full forecast.

The National Weather Service has issued the following hazardous weather outlook for Long Island:

There is potential for heavy rainfall from Monday night into Tuesday night with the passage of the remains of Florence. There is still some uncertainty on the track of this remnant low, but there is increasing confidence in a swath of 1 to 2 plus inches of rain, and locally higher amounts of 5 or more inches are also possible in its track. Due to recent rain events, grounds are saturated and river and streams flows are running well above normal. If the heavy rain swath ends up over the local region, there will be potential for urban and poor drainage flooding as well as flooding along quick responding small rivers, streams, and creeks.

Florence, now a tropical storm, was located 40 miles west of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, as of 11 a.m. Saturday, according to the National Hurricane Center. More than 30 inches of rain have been reported in parts of North Carolina, officials say, leading to catastrophic flash flooding and prolonged river flooding with the possibility of landslides in North Carolina, West Virginia and Virginia. Several people have died in the storm. Winds have weakened to about 45 mph, and Florence was expected to be downgraded to a tropical depression by Saturday night. Florence is projected to move west throughout Saturday, then turn northwest on Sunday, heading for the Ohio Valley by Monday, the National Hurricane Center advised.

There's a high rip current risk at ocean beaches on Long Island through Saturday evening with breaking waves reaching 3-5 feet.
