The National Weather Service has lowered projected snowfall totals for Long Island to just 1-2 inches on Thursday.

Those figures are down from 2-6 inches that had been predicted earlier.

Although many Long Islanders will certainly be thankful to be spared significant snowfall, more frigid and snowy weather looms right around the corner.

Gusty winds will send wind chills to as low as 15 degrees below zero on Thursday night, the NWS says.

The ”coldest airmass of the winter season” so far will then hit Long Island on Friday, the NWS says. Temperatures will likely remain in the teens on Friday, with wind chills temperatures of 10 to 20 degrees below zero possible on Friday morning.

The next chance for snow comes on Saturday. The NWS has not released specific snowfall predictions yet, but the weather service says there is “potential for a short period of heavy snow and several inches of snow accumulation.”

That coldest airmass of the season on Friday will likely be outdone late Saturday night into Sunday night.

High temperatures on Sunday could struggle to get into the lower and mid-teens, the NWS says, and lows Sunday night will approach zero in New York City and Long Island.

The last time the temperature dropped to zero in New York City: Jan. 27, 1994.

Wind chills Sunday night into Monday morning may fall to 20 to 30 degrees below zero for much of the region, the NWS says.

Bundle up.
