NASSAU COUNTY, NY — Nassau County Legislator Joshua Lafazan and his constituents recently donated $27,000 to a charity to help veterans and dogs.

The drive to collect money started on Jan. 18, after Patch broke the story of Rep. George Santos being accused of stealing $3,000 from a veteran and his sick dog. Lafazan started a fundraiser for Paws of War, a Nesconset-based organization that helps train and place service dogs with veterans.

The money comes from donations raised through the GoFundMe campaign Lafazan started, as well as private donations from Larry Sarf.

“You think about the moral bankruptcy that an individual would have to take from such a vulnerable man and a service dog that was so important to his quality of life,” Lafazan said. “Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of our community, we’ve raised the $3,000 – and a little more. We’ve now raised over $27,000 to benefit this amazing nonprofit – money that came from individuals who were sickened by the actions of George Santos and wanted to do their part to make things right.”

Lafazan was joined by constituents to make the donation to Paws of War on Feb. 15.
