As you may recall, last year a mid-day storm caused significant delays in dismissal activities. As a result, the district formed a committee of district faculty, staff and members of the PTA. The committee developed an “accelerated dismissal plan” which the Syosset Board of Education adopted at its last meeting. The plan releases the high school early, but dismisses the younger children on time to ensure that adult supervision is in place when they arrive home. Our decision today essentially follows that plan.
New York State has just announced that we will be granted additional flexibility in the administration of Regents exams. As a result, we hope no child will be disadvantaged by today’s early dismissal, nor tomorrow’s closure, or Wednesday’s potential delayed opening. Please check with your child’s teacher or the high school main office for additional information on rescheduling.
Thank you for your understanding and patience as we deal with what is being described as a storm of historic proportions. Our first priority is the safety of our students and staff – including the staff that will be tasked with extraordinary cleanup activities – and we will continuously monitor events throughout the next two days.
Stay safe,
Tom Rogers
