Utility Pole, Wires Catch Fire At Nassau Home

JERICHO, NY — Firefighters were called to a Jericho home Friday morning after a utility pole caught fire and wires burned on its deck.

Around 9:30 a.m. Friday, the Jericho Volunteer Fire Department was called for a possible house fire on Hedgerow Lane. A dual response truck from the Syosset Volunteer Fire Department also rushed to the home.

Kerry Ketsoglou, chief of the Jericho department, arrived first and saw a burning utility pole with primary power lines also ablaze on the deck.

Jericho firefighters used dry chemical extinguishers to prevent the fire from spreading to the home. Syosset Engine 585 stretched a line and a utility crew from Northern Michigan cut power to the wires.

Syosset firefighters extinguished the blaze and all firefighters were sent to other calls for downed wires.

Officials said firefighters were unusually busy Friday morning, answering hundreds of alarms for burning live wires as the region begins to see power trickle back in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Isaias.
