On June 7, 2022, staff and fellow residents at Bishop Rehabilitation and Nursing on James Street in Syracuse celebrated the 101st birthday of resident Donald Pond, along with his friends, family, and members from Honor Flight Syracuse. Mr. Pond, a proud World War II veteran, was so excited to see everyone, including his son Wayne, a neighbor, who came with their dog, and fellow veterans from Syracuse Honor Flight.

Honor Flight Syracuse, a veteran-led public 501c3 charity that honors fellow veterans in the Syracuse region, does plane trips to Washington for the vets and arranges the hero’s welcome back at the airports.

Recreation Director Tammy Shoales, who arranged the birthday celebration, was so moved that Honor Flight Syracuse attended the event. "We are so honored to have Jim from Honor Flight Syracuse attend this big birthday celebration. Donald never got to take the flight but is still in the queue to go if he ever wanted to. This is why he is honored by this group."
