1. One person hospitalized after trying to escape home fire in Syracuse (cnycentral.com) — A serious house fire on East Genesee Street in Syracuse sent one person to the hospital and left the home partially collapsed. Firefighters battled heavy flames for about an hour before withdrawing for safety, while the Red Cross is now helping five displaced residents as investigators work to determine what caused the blaze.
   

2. SUNY opening new nursing program in rapidly evolving Syracuse neighborhood (syracuse.com) — A new SUNY-funded licensed practical nursing program is coming to the Syracuse Educational Opportunity Center near the rapidly changing East Adams neighborhood, with the largest grant in the state. Starting in 2026, the program will train 20 to 40 students a year, expanding local healthcare career options and investing in new labs, classrooms, and faculty right in the city.
   

3. Two men threaten cashier with gun in North Side robbery and steal his car, police say (syracuse.com) — An armed robbery on Syracuse’s North Side Tuesday night left a store cashier threatened at gunpoint and without his car, which was later found abandoned. Police say two men stole cash, tobacco products and the cashier’s black Hyundai Sonata from Sun Syracuse Market on Ash Street, and they’re asking anyone with information to contact detectives.
   

4. Former undersheriff earns degree from Onondaga Community College after two-decade journey (cnycentral.com) — A longtime Onondaga County law enforcement leader has finally finished a goal he started decades ago, earning his Criminal Justice degree from Onondaga Community College in Syracuse. Former undersheriff Jeffrey Passino, a Liverpool High School graduate, completed his remaining classes one semester at a time while working full-time, and now serves as a school resource officer in Oswego.
   

5. Chancellor Search Committee narrows candidate pool (dailyorange.com) — Syracuse University’s search committee has narrowed its chancellor candidate pool to a smaller group as it moves into the next phase of interviews. Campus leaders aim to select a new chancellor by spring so that person can start in the 2026-27 academic year, following Kent Syverud’s planned departure.
