📰 News we're reading

1. Man charged in overdose death of 4-year-old girl in Syracuse (syracuse.com) — Syracuse police have charged a 38-year-old city man with criminally negligent homicide after 4-year-old Amora Graves died from ingesting methadone in a Syracuse home in August. Authorities say she was found unresponsive on Lakeview Avenue and could not be revived; the medical examiner ruled she had taken a lethal dose before the man was arrested Thursday and released on an appearance ticket.

2. As temperatures drop, outreach groups work to keep unhoused Central New Yorkers safe (cnycentral.com) — With freezing temperatures settling over Syracuse, local outreach group In My Father’s Kitchen and its Hire Ground program are working daily to reach unhoused neighbors and connect them with resources. The team offers day-labor opportunities, case management, and winter gear, and urges residents to call 211 if they see someone outside in dangerous conditions or want to donate essentials.

3. Old friends, white stones: Go club continues 60-year legacy (dailyorange.com) — A longtime Syracuse Go Club, founded by a former Syracuse University professor, is still meeting weekly at the Wegmans DeWitt Café nearly 60 years after it began on campus. Members describe how the club migrated off SU grounds, grew through local outreach, and continues drawing both veteran and newer players to learn and compete over the ancient board game Go.

4. Sweet dreams, Child (thecatholicsun.com) — A Syracuse-based nonprofit, Sleep in Heavenly Peace, is building and delivering free beds to children in need across Onondaga and Oswego counties, including a recent delivery to a local family whose kids had been sleeping on mattresses on the floor. Volunteers, especially church confirmation students, help construct and personalize each bed, and the Syracuse chapter is seeking donations of bedding, funds, and time to serve hundreds still on its waitlist.

5. Syracuse man gets longer sentence for trafficking guns after refusing to testify against codefendant (syracuse.com) — A Syracuse man has been sentenced to 20 years in state prison for helping traffic more than 50 guns from Georgia to Syracuse, after refusing to testify against a codefendant as promised in his plea deal. Prosecutors said only 19 guns have been recovered and several were used in violent crimes, while the judge ruled the longer sentence was clearly laid out in the agreement.
