📰 News we're reading

1. Syracuse to begin killing deer in targeted neighborhoods next week (syracuse.com) — Syracuse will restart its nighttime deer cull on Dec. 15, targeting select east, west, and south side sites through March to cut crashes, damage to green spaces, and tick-borne illnesses. USDA sharpshooters will only work on approved, closed properties, with meat donated to the Food Bank of Central New York. Residents can report suspicious activity, volunteer as deer diarists, or offer eligible properties.

2. Hochul: Statewide shootings down 60% since 2021; shootings in 2025 reach new low (spectrumlocalnews.com) — Gun violence in Syracuse has dropped by double digits this year, part of a broader statewide decline that officials say has pushed shootings with injuries to their lowest level since tracking began in 2006. New state data credits the Gun Involved Violence Elimination program, which supports Syracuse and 27 other communities, with helping reduce shootings and gun-related deaths across New York.

3. Man shut himself inside house after threatening neighbor with gun in Syracuse, police say (syracuse.com) — Syracuse police say a man barricaded himself inside a Washington Square home for over two hours Tuesday morning after allegedly threatening a neighbor with a gun. SWAT officers responded as a precaution before the man surrendered and was arrested on menacing and weapon charges, then held at the Onondaga County Justice Center.

4. Syracuse Stage receives Indigenous Theatermaker Award (dailyorange.com) — Syracuse Stage has been honored with the 2025 Lucille Lortel Foundation Indigenous Theatermaker Award, plus a $20,000 grant, for decades of work uplifting Indigenous stories. From early collaborations with Onondaga Nation youth to the multi-year “Our Words Are Seeds” project, the theater is deepening relationships with Haudenosaunee communities and using the new funding to seed future Indigenous-led productions in Syracuse.

5. Rome Free Academy hockey routs C-NS in heated rivalry: ‘We don't like these guys, plain and simple' (61 photos) (syracuse.com) — A heated boys hockey rivalry saw Rome Free Academy crush Cicero-North Syracuse 8–1, with junior Braden Meeks scoring four goals and RFA killing all nine C-NS power plays. The Syracuse-area Northstars fell to 2–2 as penalties and missed chances overshadowed their lone third-period goal in this early-season statement game.
