Syracuse plans ‘clanker system' to stop trucks from hitting Park Street bridge (syracuse.com) — Syracuse plans to install a $500,000 “clanker system” on Park Street to warn over-height trucks before they slam into the low CSX railroad bridge, which has been struck dozens of times in recent years. The city expects state CHIPS funds to reimburse the cost and hopes to have the system operating by late 2026 after coordinating with DOT, OCWA and CSX.
   

2. More families seeking help at Syracuse's Samaritan Center as living costs climb (localsyr.com) — Syracuse’s Samaritan Center is seeing about 50% more guests as local families struggle with rising living costs and cuts to HEAP and SNAP benefits. With food prices up around 15%, the center is asking residents for donations and volunteers to help keep free meals and support services going through the holidays and winter.

Syracuse snow plow operators unlicensed, companies begin filing paperwork (cnycentral.com) — Private snow plow companies working in Syracuse currently have no city licenses, even though the city requires decals on each piece of equipment to prove compliance. The city auditor says several firms have started but not finished applications, while City Hall clarifies its sidewalk contractor doesn’t need an annual plowing license. Residents are urged to verify licenses before hiring plow services.
   

4. Applications open for Syracuse STEAM High School, Class of 2030 (cnycentral.com) — Families of Syracuse-area eighth graders can now apply to the Syracuse STEAM High School’s Class of 2030, with applications due January 16, 2026. The school, located on Warren Street in Syracuse, offers mentoring, internships, and up to 30 free college credits through ten focused concentrations.
   

5. Why Flock will get to keep Syracuse drivers' ‘anonymized' data even if lawmakers cancel their contract (centralcurrent.org) — Syracuse drivers’ license plate data can still be used by Flock Safety even if city lawmakers cancel the company’s contract, because a 2023 agreement granted Flock perpetual rights to anonymized data. City officials, local tech experts, and councilors are now debating how anonymous that data really is and whether Syracuse should switch to another vendor.
