Syracuse, NY, June 6, 2022 - Plastic Pollution and You is a new 126-page, 15-lesson curriculum offered by New York Sea Grant that is focused on a man-made threat to the quality of New York’s marine and freshwater aquatic ecosystems.
The curriculum is designed to be appropriate for multiple grade levels, meets New York State and Next Generation Learning Standards, and aligns with New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) New York Ocean Action Plan and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Marine Debris Program initiatives in New York’s Great Lakes and other coastal regions.
Details on the NYSDEC-funded "Plastic Pollution and You," including how to receive a free copy, are offered in NYSG's Spring 2022 newsletter, NY Coastlines, out today. E-subscribers should check their Inbox (or Spam filter/folder) for this double issue of "NYSG E-News" and new E-subscriptions can be made to receive this issue now at www.nyseagrant.org/nycoastlines.
Other highlights from the e-newsletter:
(a) Proposals are due July 1st for the next round of Great Lakes small grants, which are funded through a partnership between NYSDEC and NYSG. The collaboration, which began in 2015, is creating big opportunities for sportsmen, residents, and visitors to access New York’s aquatic resources statewide.
(b) You can provide input on NYSG's next Strategic Plan that will guide work for 2024-2027. Stakeholder feedback is an important component of the Plan as it helps drive NYSG's priorities and programs for the future.
(c) Nearly a half-dozen new Sea Grant specialists have been hired. One is helping to build up local climate resilience and ocean literacy while others are working to protect various New York coastal communities.
(d) A handful of Regional and National news items, as well as an extensive Currents archive filled with recent media mentions, including clean and safe boating video and audio clips.
Since 1971, New York Sea Grant, a cooperative program of Cornell University and the State University of New York, has been one of 34 university-based programs under NOAA's National Sea Grant College Program. More at www.nyseagrant.org.
