1000+ Sign Petition Begging NY To Repave Route 9A

The road is a risk for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians, the petition's creator said on Change.org.

ELMSFORD, NY — Saying the Saw Mill River Road is in horrible condition and needs desperate attention, an Elmsford resident has started an online petition that has already gotten 1,020 signatures.

"It is of great concern to myself and other fellow residents," said Jennifer Glen.

The whole stretch in Greenburgh and Elmsford is hazardous due to excessive potholes and road erosion. "This poses risk to drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians," she wrote on the petition at Change.org. "Also at the expense of residents, vehicles tires, suspensions etc. have been damaged as well."

Calling herself and affronted, Glen said state transportation officials told her the road is not currently on the NYSDOT capital program.

"This is ridiculous," said Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner, adding that the petition drive was also endorsed by Elmsford Mayor Robert Williams.

The stretch, known in central Westchester County as Saw Mill River Road, is not the only part of Route 9A in serious disrepair.

After increasingly vociferous complaints from residents and officials in Briarcliff Manor and Ossining, the state committed to study their portion of Route 9A, aka the Briarcliff Peekskill Parkway, which has narrow shoulders, low-clearance underpasses and general design deficiencies including constant flooding.

State officials did not say anything about repairing the many serious potholes on that section of the road. SEE: State Allots $3 Million To Study Improvements To Route 9A

"The safety and convenience of the traveling public are always top priorities for the New York State Department of Transportation and we continually monitor pavement conditions on State Route 9A in Elmsford and Briarcliff Manor, and conduct maintenance as needed," said spokeswoman Heather Pillworth for the NYDOT Hudson Valley Region.
