3 Police Cars Hit After Car With Stolen Plates Flees Sprain Traffic Stop: NYSP

Troopers attempted to stop the 2020 Maxima after a Westchester County Real Time Crime alert broadcast, according to New York State Police.

GREENBURGH, NY — A wild chase on the Sprain ended with a crash, and a brief foot chase, according to police.

The New York State Police say that on Tuesday, around 8:56 p.m., troopers from the Hawthorne barracks stopped a 2020 Maxima in the area of mile marker 6.0 on the Sprain Brook Parkway, in the town of Greenburgh, for a reported stolen plate that was broadcasted by the Westchester County Real Time Crime.

State police say that the vehicle initially stopped, and then fled. The Maxima then continued southbound, striking three Westchester County patrol vehicles before coming to a stop.

The driver, identified as 54-year-old George Evangelista, of the Bronx, fled on foot, but was quickly taken into custody by officers at the scene.

Evangelista was taken to a local medical facility for non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

He was then released to New York State Police and charged with misdemeanor second-degree reckless endangerment; three misdemeanor counts of criminal mischief (reckless property damage greater than $250); misdemeanor fifth-degree criminal possession stolen property; misdemeanor second-degree obstruct governmental administration (prevent official function); misdemeanor third-degree unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle; and traffic violations.

Evangelista was then turned over to the NYPD for an active warrant.
