UPDATE (1 P.M. THURSDAY) - Sleepy Hollow police described the remains of a weapon found on the old General Motors site as a Mauser-stlye pistol.

The pistol was missing internal mechanisms and other parts, and was inoperable. There were no bullets in the gun, according to police.

Spend enough time moving around dirt in a huge historic plot and you're bound to come across something interesting.

Sure enough, workers at the GM site, recently wrapping up their remediation project, found an old firearm.

On Jan. 28 at 8:35 a.m., a caller reported to police that while conducting removal work on the old GM property, one of the workers discovered, recovered and cleared an old firearm from the ground. Police went to collect the firearm and put it into the evidence locker after taking photos.

Police Chief Gregory Camp wouldn't reveal just how old and what type of gun it was as the discovery is under further investigation. "Old and pieces missing," he said. "Inoperable."
