SLEEPY HOLLOW, NY — It's sometimes easy to take even the most fundamental necessities for granted, but even basic needs can sometimes be hard to come by in a crisis.

Phelps Hospital held its first-ever bra drive. Organizers say the efforts will improve access to an often overlooked need, offer comfort for cancer patients in the midst of change, and supports breast health for disadvantaged women.

Organizers say that for many, affordability limits access, yet proper bra support is a foundational aspect of overall breast health and comfort.

The initiative was conceived to directly benefit women in underserved communites, who will have access to these bras for free during "shopping days" at the Community Wardrobe. This need is particularly acute for those navigating the physical and emotional journey of breast cancer treatment and survivorship, according to the volunteers.

"We're really happy and grateful that we had this opportunity through the Community Wardrobe here at Sleepy Hollow to extend access to this often-expensive piece of clothing, especially patients that may be post-surgical," Phelps Hospital Oncology Program Administrator Kristina Gazivoda explained. "A crucial part of our donations included surgical bras, which are vital after breast surgery to provide support, compression, and comfort, helping minimize swelling and bruising while allowing easy access to the surgical site. This is the first time such specialized support will be available to those served by the Community Wardrobe, making a profound difference in their recovery and well-being."

While this is the first year for the bra drive, the need is not new.

"One of the items that we are always low on that are in high demand are bras," said Daphne Uviller, one of four co-directors of the Community Wardrobe. "And so this gift is stunning because we're going to be able to get every female client what she needs for the next few months."

Phelps will continue to accept bra donations through the end of October.
