Is There a Fire in You?

Looking to make a difference in your own community but not sure where to begin? How about joining the Tarrytown or Sleepy Hollow Fire Department?

With a huge statewide campaign going on now to retain current and recruit new volunteer firefighters, our local teams – both Tarrytown and Sleepy Departments are 100 perfect volunteer – are always thrilled to welcome members.

“One of the many benefits to becoming a member is the knowledge that you are providing a valuable service to the community in which you live,” says the volunteering page on the Tarrytown FD website.

The Fireman’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) secured a U.S Department of Homeland Security Staffing for Fire and Emergency Response grant to launch a publicity campaign in the hopes of signing on 15,000 new firefighters statewide by 2015.

As part of the multi-media effort, FASNY launched a website FireInYou.org where those interested can learn what being a firefighter entails, watch videos, and sign up. 

Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow Departments also have their own websites, each with their own volunteering pages and plenty of info.

The more men and women join the faster the fire response time and the safer we all are.

Requirements? All the training and necessary equipment are free and provided. Volunteers should live or work in the village department they want to join and be 17 years of age or older and in good health.

Lucky for us here in the villages, notes Tarrytown firefighter Craig Allan, we’re close to the Westchester Fire Training Center in Valhalla.

And of course, in addition to character-building and saving lives, firefighter also make lifelong bonds.

"Fire companies in Sleepy Hollow have been, and still are, social organizations in addition to being firefighting units," says the Sleepy Hollow FD website. "Through their participation, men and women have made lifelong friendships."
