Correction: Moon Bears are black bears, not brown
Kai Madden is taking his madness to a whole new level. You may remember the British Tarrytown resident for taking on the brutally challenging Tough Mudder obstacle course to raise money to protect Moon Bears.
“I want to do everything I can to help Animals Asia end their suffering,” said Madden.

Last year, he raised $27,000 by taking on the challenge that has one run though high voltage wires, swim through dumpsters of ice and navigate through burning bales of hay.Â
The funds were donated to Animals Asia, to prevent the bears, also known as Asiatic black bears, from having their bile siphoned out of them and sold in medicines for ailments like erectile dysfuncion and hangovers. The constant siphoning can give the animals liver cancer.

This time he plans to do the Tough Mudder in a full bear suit and is asking others to join his team in the challenge on Oct. 13 and help him raise funds by performing their own crazy acts.
“You can do anything to raise funds, but the more creative or outrageous the better,” said Madden.Â
“You could dye your hair a bright color, spend the day on roller skates, run a race backwards, blindfolded, or carrying someone. Anything really. You could even just have people donate for your birthday. I have a cat on the team raising money by doing tricks.”Â

This year’s funds will go toward purchasing an ultrasound machine, at the Animals Asia’s Vietnam Bear Rescue Center outside of Hanoii, for assessing the of bears who have been damaged by bile extraction.Â
