New York Post: Tappan Zee Boat Crash an 'Accident Waiting to Happen'

The crash between a powerboat and construction barge near the Tappan Zee Bridge that left four injured and claimed two lives, including bride-to-be Lindsey Stewart, was an “accident waiting to happen, according to Sleepy Hollow resident Lois Weiss.

Weiss’ recent piece in the New York Post, says boaters looking to booze it up at bars off the Hudson River, like Washington Irving Boat Club in Tarrytown, combined with preliminary construction for the Tappan Zee Bridge is a recipe for disaster.

Weiss criticizes the endless pages of project agreements that fail to mention boaters and barges, and says that lighting and signage that identify construction barges, which she calls "floating menaces, are inadequate.

Contractors agreed to add “some” additional lighting, but she says the lights still weren’t visible from her Sleepy Hollow home, according to the New York Post article.

While Coast Guard spokesman Charles Rowe said the Coast Guard may have to check boast at night at local boat clubs, Weiss says New York State and Tappan Zee contractors also have a responsibility to make sure proper safety precautions are taken to avoid future accidents.
