Update: Sleepy Hollow Dems Have Competition

Late January and it's time for local election season to begin.

March 19 Election Day and the months leading up to it should be interesting in both villages as both Mayoral and three Trustee seats are up in Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown. 

Sleepy Hollow Democrats are the first to announce their caucus and for the first time in recent history, the Dems will have competition in their own party.

Trustees Bruce Campbell, Barbara Carr, and Evelyn Stupel will all be rerunning for their seats. However, Campbell reports that two other Trustee candidates are "being put forward," noting that "you never know who else might show up." 

Last year's caucus received some flack for being super-short and thus curtailing one group's attempt to nominate resident Donald Caetano. 

Campbell said he welcomes the competition. "I think this is a good thing," he said. "All too often a party leader or Mayor try to control the candidates and an open contest, like open discussion on the Board, is a good thing for Democracy." 

Mayor Ken Wray is running unopposed in his party, so far, unless someone else comes forward on Saturday.

Also unopposed now for party renomination is Village Justice Andres Valespino.

The caucus to choose democratic nominees to run in this March's election will be held this Saturday, Jan. 26 at 9 a.m. at the Galgano Senior Center, 55 Elm Street. All registered Democrats who live in the Village of Sleepy Hollow are invited to attend and vote. A photo ID is required.
