Sleepy Hollow High School Sophomores Explore Future Careers

Students gain firsthand insight into future pathways at the SWBOCES Career Conference

Sleepy Hollow High School sophomores had the opportunity to explore potential career paths during a recent visit to the Southern Westchester BOCES (SWBOCES) Center for Career Services. Students spent the day learning directly from professionals representing a wide range of fields, giving them firsthand insight into the many opportunities available after high school.

Each year, SWBOCES hosts its annual Career Conference for students across Southern Westchester County. The event is designed to help 10th graders identify areas of interest, build early awareness of career possibilities, and understand the education and training needed to pursue those paths.

This year, several Sleepy Hollow High School teachers, counselors, and administrators led the session on Education, offering students a closer look at the field of teaching, school counseling, and school administration.

“I think it's a great opportunity for them because as sophomores they are still young, so they have time to explore different options before they commit to what they want to study in college,” said Social Studies teacher Jean Paul Ospina, who co-led the Education session. “And the earlier they can get to explore what these careers are actually like, the better it's going to be for them, and they'll have better options and knowledge in the future.”

Counselor Michael Genua who also helped lead the Education session, echoed the value of early exposure.

“I think 10th grade is a great time to expose students to different ideas, because it's a time where they start to think about what life is going to be like in the future, but don't know exactly what they want to do,” said Mr. Genua. “So having them talk to adults in the field who have been through the same kind of process is always valuable.”

The day offered students a meaningful chance to reflect on their interests, ask questions, and begin thinking about the educational and professional journey ahead. Sleepy Hollow educators look forward to continuing to support students as they explore their strengths, passions, and future goals.
