Sleepy Hollow Senior Earns Top Honors for Artwork Portfolio
Ivy Burk's creative leadership guides student-produced magazine to multiple statewide awards
Sleepy Hollow High School senior Ivy Burk, Editor-in-Chief and Lead Designer of the school’s literary magazine Shadow and Substance, has been recognized by the Empire State School Press Association (ESSPA) with the Best Artwork Portfolio award — a distinction that highlights her exceptional talent, creativity, and leadership.
Under Ivy’s direction, Shadow and Substance also earned Best Overall Layout Design and received Silver for Best Overall Literary Magazine, marking a standout year for the student-produced publication. Ivy’s thoughtful approach to design, her artistic vision, and her commitment to nurturing a collaborative environment helped guide the magazine’s success.
Fellow student Josephine “Joe” Kelly worked closely alongside Ivy and played an important role in bringing Ivy’s creative vision to life.

“These awards celebrate the incredible talent of our students, and Ivy’s recognition is especially meaningful,” said English teacher and faculty advisor Katherine Donahue. “Her vision, creativity, and hard work were at the heart of this year’s achievements. Watching Ivy lead with such maturity — and mentor Joe along the way — has been truly inspiring.”
Ms. Donahue, who also serves as ELA Department Chair, added that the ESSPA awards highlight excellence in student art, writing, and design, and bring statewide attention to the creative work happening inside Sleepy Hollow classrooms.
