Tarrytown Students Honored at Changemakers Culminating Event
Celebration brings together young Latina leaders from Tarrytown, Ossining, and Peekskill for a year-end showcase of growth and leadership
The Public Schools of the Tarrytowns, in partnership with the Ossining and Peekskill School Districts and Open Roads, hosted the culminating event of the Changemakers Program on December 8. The gathering marked the end of a yearlong experience focused on bilingual, women-led leadership development and civic learning for a cohort of young Latina students.
Throughout the year, students participated in workshops, mentorship opportunities, and experiential learning designed to build confidence, foster community engagement, and strengthen their identity as emerging leaders. One highlight of the program included an outdoor wilderness adventure in Utah, where students explored the high desert and took part in activities emphasizing teamwork, communication, and personal growth.
The culminating event brought together students, families, educators, and community partners as participants shared their personal stories, achievements, and powerful Statements of Intent—reflections on how they plan to use their voices and leadership moving forward.

“Whether it's through running my non-profits, volunteering, organizing events or simply being a voice for positive change, I want to contribute in a meaningful way,” said Sleepy Hollow High School student Alexa Zhinin. “The wilderness adventure through the high desert taught me the importance of collaboration, communication, and simply empathy, and I plan to use these skills to build stronger relationships and create a more inclusive environment.”
Fellow Changemaker and Sleepy Hollow student Adanhyr Morocho-Chuchuca shared how the program shaped her sense of purpose. “Leadership isn't something I found; it's something I built through every person I've helped and every lesson I've learned,” she said. “My journey has taught me that real leaders don't wait for change; they plan it with all their heart and create it.”

The evening served as a celebration of student voice, resilience, and community. Families and educators applauded the strength and clarity with which students expressed their growth and aspirations.
The district extends its gratitude to Open Roads for leading this powerful partnership and creating an environment where students could challenge themselves, explore their identities, and develop as leaders.
