Wilson Park Neighbors Want Safety First

The latest Tarrytown Planning Board session with a list of Toll Brothers site plans on the agenda forecasted another round of dissent from Wilson Park project's dissatisfied neighbors. The sites however were postponed and the Toll Brothers didn't show. 

Which didn't stop one vocal resident Rob DeRocker from coming anyway to speak his peace "for the record." And, for the record, he says he's not opposed to the end development but its process.

“I want to say that at this point we have no interest in stopping, much less slowing, this project,” Rob DeRocker said in a recent email to Toll Brothers project manager Chris Badger. “The houses are going to be built, and in the cases of Lots 3 and 4, we’d rather they be done this winter than protracted into the summer when we’d want to spend time outdoors… However, it’s very much in all of our interest that the work be done legally, within the Village code, and most of all, safely.”

DeRocker detailed how construction work was taking place on Martin Luther King Day, a national holiday, and how he had to call the police twice that day to halt the work.

This isn’t the first time the Toll Brothers have appeared in the police blotter. On Nov. 20 at 7:49 a.m. a caller reported that construction noise was coming from the area of the Toll Brother’s construction site at Wilson Park Drive. The officer on the scene advised employees of the village ordinance against construction at this time.

Then of course was the more major problem of the , and opening up the whole issue of truck traffic in the sensitive area in general.

Mimi Godwin responded to DeRocker's recent email with her own story: a truck carrying lumber came up River Terrace a “terrific speed,” she said, and found it was not able to make the turn. The driver used her driveway instead, where she was out getting her mail, and Godwin said she was almost hit when he went in reverse by accident.

“I had to jump to the side or I would have been hit,” Godwin said. “The driveway is my property and getting killed in my own driveway would not have gone over very well with my family! This just is another example of how out of control this construction project has gotten and the neighbors deserve some protection from the Village.”

Again, comes the cry for an independent supervisor since neighbors believe the contractor isn’t doing enough on that front.

“In my opinion – and that of many of our neighbors – it’s time for the hiring of an independent supervisor – maybe as much for Toll’s protection as well as ours,” DeRocker writes.
