Retailer Reminds Shoppers of Sales Tax Break

A sign currently hanging in the window at Target in South Setauket reminds shoppers of an important fact: clothing and shoes priced up to $110 are exempt from state sales tax.

Instead of paying the total sales tax rate of 8.625 percent, shoppers in our area will only pay the county and local portion of the sales tax on those items, 4.625 percent.

Patch previously reported that the state legislature in 2012 doubled the maximum price of the exempt items from $55 to $110, with Sen. John Flanagan, R-East Northport, saying it is "good for hardworking men and women who are constantly trying to stretch their budgets to provide for their families and equally good for helping to stimulate our economy."
